Filled With the Spirit

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” –  Ephesians 5:18 (NIV)

Do you find yourself settling for the ordinary — daily routines, habitual behaviours, mundane activities — and getting into a comfort zone that certainly keeps you safe but probably stagnant? Know that God did not call us to the ordinary; instead, He calls us to an extraordinary life, certainly not by our own strength but by the power of His Spirit.

When it comes to doing the jobs God called us to, we don’t need degrees and years of experience to get the job done. In the early Christian church, God used ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Ordinary people, including fishermen, turned the world upside down – no Bible college training, no universities, just ordinary people. How did they do that? Certainly, it was because they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, Who empowered them.

It always appears that God uses people who seemingly lack much talent because all the glory will go to Him. God desires to do the same with His people today. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, amazing things happen. In Ephesians 5:18, there is a contrast between being controlled by a temporary substance and being filled with the Holy Spirit. It is not a ‘one-time feel-good’ event but daily empowerment. It is the continuous infilling of the Spirit to guide, renew, empower, and transform our lives daily.

Let us allow the Holy Spirit to fill us, take our ordinary moments, and make them moments of divine appointments. When we surrender, we allow our mundane activities and tasks to become our worship unto God and build our ministry. What we say carries weight, our actions and behaviours will reflect God’s grace, and as we live our purpose, others get to see and experience the glory of God.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I invite you to fill us today. Turn our distractions to Your direction. May our weaknesses be transformed into strength and make our ordinary extraordinary. Oh God, may our lives reflect Your power and presence. Make us vessels of Your extraordinary grace, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
